Port Douglas: Reef Days, Rainforest Real Estate and a Well-Earned Breather

17 August 2026·5 min read

Six weeks into the Big Lap, we pulled into Port Douglas for a private Great Barrier Reef charter, a look at the Daintree property market, and a few good conversations with local agents.

Six weeks into the Big Lap, we've met agents, partners and clients from one end of the coast to the other. By the time we rolled into Port Douglas, we were ready for a weekend of staying put, no shifting caravan sites, swapping the road for a bit of nature.

Port Douglas turned out to be the right place for it. It's one of the only places on earth where two UNESCO World Heritage sites meet, the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, so slowing down here isn't really a compromise. It's the drawcard.

A day on the reef, our way

Destiny Blue's tender pulled up on a quiet coral beach off Port Douglas, with the reef waters stretching to the horizon
A private charter day on the outer reef with Destiny Blue, Port Douglas.

We spent a full day out on the Great Barrier Reef with Destiny Blue Charters, a locally owned and operated private charter based right in Port Douglas.

The whole point of a private charter is that the day is built around you, not a boatload of strangers on a set timetable. We had most of our stops entirely to ourselves, just us out in the middle of the reef, no other boats around, and crossed paths with whales and manta rays along the way. None of that happens on a big group tour. We filmed the day too, you can watch it on Instagram @travelling.broker.

If you're weighing up a big group tour against a private charter for your own trip north, our take is simple: a private charter costs more, but you get a day shaped around what you actually want to do, not what fits a bus timetable. We splurged on it ourselves, and we've got no regrets. For a lot of people, a trip to the Great Barrier Reef is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and that's exactly when the investment is worth it.

What's moving in the Daintree property market

While this part of the trip was meant to be downtime, Xav still caught up with some of the leading real estate agents in the area to get a read on what's happening in the Far North Queensland property market. The conversations were a good reminder that this part of the state has its own property rhythm, driven as much by lifestyle buyers and acreage blocks as by anything else.

Figures above are a general guide only, based on standard assumptions and current lending conditions. Every situation is different, so treat this as a starting point for a conversation, not a quote.

These aren't properties that suit everyone. We're simply showcasing some of the most unique properties we come across as we make our way around the country.

Two very different price points, but the same underlying question for anyone drawn to property up here: how does finance actually work for an off-grid, acreage or income-producing purchase like this?

We're breaking down the real numbers, deposit, borrowing capacity, what a lender actually looks at, for both of these on Instagram @travelling.broker. Worth a follow if you've ever considered living in the rainforest, even if it's just a pipe dream.

Back on the road

Two days of reef and rainforest was exactly the reset we needed. From here, it's back to the road, more agents, more partners, and more of the country to see.
