Common questions

Everything you want to know about caravan finance.

Caravan finance is generally a type of personal or asset-backed loan used specifically to purchase a caravan, camper trailer, or motorhome. You borrow a set amount, pay interest and fees, and make regular repayments over an agreed term. Consumer caravan loans in Australia sit under the National Consumer Credit Protection Act, which means lenders and brokers must assess whether the loan is suitable for your situation before recommending it. At McCoy Finance we take this obligation seriously and only recommend finance that is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
A secured caravan loan uses the caravan itself as security against the loan. Because the lender holds security over the asset, they may offer better terms including longer repayment periods, higher borrowing limits, and potentially lower interest rates. If you are unable to repay the loan, the lender can sell the asset to recover the outstanding amount. An unsecured loan does not require an asset as security and approval is based on your income and credit history. Terms are typically flexible, ranging from one to seven years, though rates may be higher than a secured equivalent. The right structure depends on your situation, the age and value of the van, and which lenders are available. We will explain both options clearly and recommend what suits you.
Yes in most cases. Finance is available for both new and used caravans including private sale purchases, though lenders typically require additional verification for private sales such as ownership confirmation and a PPSR check to confirm there is no money owing on the van. Some lenders apply age restrictions or shorter loan terms depending on the caravan's age and condition. We know which lenders on our panel are best suited to used van purchases and will match you accordingly.
Not necessarily. It depends on your financial situation, credit profile, and the lender. Some lenders are comfortable with no deposit on a strong application, while others prefer you to contribute a portion of the purchase price. We will walk you through what applies to your situation before any application is submitted.
Loan terms typically range from one to seven years depending on the lender and the age and value of the caravan. You can choose between fixed and variable interest rates, and some lenders offer a balloon payment option at the end of the term to reduce regular repayments. A longer term means lower regular repayments but more interest paid over the life of the loan. A shorter term means higher repayments but less total interest. We will explain the trade-offs clearly so you can make an informed decision.
Most lenders will require comprehensive insurance on the caravan before approving a secured loan. This protects both you and the lender. If you do not already have insurance in place we can help point you in the right direction before your application is submitted.
Yes. If your current caravan loan is more than 12 months old it is worth reviewing. Rates and lender policies change over time. A quick conversation with us will tell you whether refinancing makes sense for your situation and what the potential savings could look like.
Generally you will need proof of identity such as a driver's licence, proof of income such as recent payslips or tax returns if self-employed, and details of the caravan you are looking to purchase. For private sales lenders may also require a PPSR check result and details of the seller. Requirements vary by lender and we will confirm exactly what is needed based on your situation before any application is submitted.
No. Our service is free to you. McCoy Finance is paid a commission by the lender when your finance settles. Before you proceed we are required to provide you with a Credit Proposal Disclosure document that sets out exactly how we are paid, by whom, and in what amount.
